The Case for Albanian Exceptionalism

Rate: 0 Flag
By Daniel Rigney
What’s all this I hear about Albanian exceptionalism?*
After several minutes of serious study on the Internet, including a meaningful visit to the CIA World Factbook, I’m ready to conclude that Albania is indeed unique and distinctive, and therefore exceptional.
No country in the world is closer to Greece, the cradle of Western Civilization.
No other country has Albanian as its principal language. Every other country is, in that sense, Albanian-illiterate.
Albania has life expectancies that rival those in more advanced-industrial countries like the United States, yet the Albanians spend only 6.9% of their GDP on health costs.
Albania ‘s black double-eagled flag on a red field is arguably the coolest flag in the world, with the exception of your own country’s flag.
What other country in the world can claim the ancestry of Mother Teresa, the Belushi brothers, and Regis Philbin? Need I say more?
In conclusion, Albania is exceptional in all these respects, and many others.
Oh, you said “American exceptionalism”?
Never mind.

*Once again I’m shamelessly homaging Gilda Radner’s memorable character Emily Litella on SNL, circa 1980. For a previous tribute, see
