With the new year only months away, it’s not too early for the fashion industry to begin pulling new trends out of its sleeves. What vogueish style directives will slick fashion magazines be issuing to their well-heeled readers this spring?
Look for a high-kicking flapper revival on Model’s Row (or whatever fashion insiders call their industry) following last night’s third and final segment of Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s extraordinary PBS documentary “Prohibition” (“A Nation of Hypocrites”).
The flapper craze will be followed closely by a designer dive into depression chic, a style that will put millions or billions of dollars into the silky pockets of the fashionista party.
Meanwhile, in the world of NFL fashion, watch for a continuation of the Darth Vader look, but with increasingly neonized colors to take fans’ attention off the fact that they’re watching large, cynical corporations compete on a financial gridiron.
It may be too soon, though, to predict the long-awaited return of biblical robes, or even fashion-classic Greek or Roman robes, except at fundamentalist amusement parks and college fraternity retro parties. We may have to wait until 2013 for these.
Remember: New fashions, even winking retro ones, help to stimulate a lagging economy. Let’s all do our part to bring retro back.
One-percenters, dig deep into your stylish pockets and consume. You'll be creating jobs, and the people who actually make the clothes may see them again in a few years in the thrift stores.
